HOLY MICHAEL ARCHANGEL

Defend us in the day of battle.

Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.

May God rebuke him we humbly pray,

And do now, Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Power of God,

Thrust down into Hell,

Satan, and all his wicked spirits,

Who prowl through the world, for the ruin of souls.  Amen.

Sancte Michael Archangele,

Defende nos in proelio,

Contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium.

Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur:

Tuque, Princeps militiae caelestis, in virtute Dei,

In infernum detrude

Satanam aliosque spiritus malignos,

Qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo.  Amen.

The origins of the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel can be traced back to a series of events involving Pope Leo XIII, who served as Pope from 1878 to 1903. According to historical accounts, on October 13, 1884, Pope Leo XIII had a mystical experience while celebrating Mass in a small chapel in the Vatican.

During this experience, Pope Leo XIII had a vision of demons gathered around the altar, threatening the Church and humanity. This vision is said to have deeply disturbed him, and he was inspired to compose a prayer as a response to this spiritual attack. It is believed that the pope received a message from God that the Church was facing grave dangers from evil forces and needed protection.

As a result, Pope Leo XIII composed the Prayer to St. Michael in Latin (the Devil hates Latin), and it was included in the Roman Ritual, which is a collection of liturgical texts used in Catholic liturgy.

The Prayer to St. Michael was ordered to be recited at the end of Mass by all, as a way to invoke the intercession of St. Michael the Archangel, who is traditionally considered the leader of the heavenly host and the protector against evil forces. The prayer specifically asks for St. Michael’s assistance in defending the Church, protecting souls, and casting out evil influences.
